Every Idea Was Terrible. Until It Works.

The following is a 100% true conversation between me and my friend 10 years ago.

Any resemblance to existing channels is purely coincidental.

friend: bro i have an idea. we should start a youtube channel

me: lol.. doing what

friend: power washing people's lawns and driveways or trimming their hedges or gardens

me: that's boring dude

friend: okay what about beaver dam removal or cleaning canal bridges. all that old grime and moss built up over years

me: voiceless?

friend: yeah just pure visuals

me: bad idea.. nobody's subscribing to watch a bridge get scrubbed in silence

a few minutes pass

friend: washing carpets then. you know that thing where you pour the dirty water out at the end. so satisfying

me: no

friend: ok what if i told you i had a genuinely interesting one

me: go on

friend: trimming cow or horse hoofs

me: okay.. that's actually different

but novelty wears off.. after watching 2-3 videos people may lose interest and stop watching

can you sustain people's interest for long term?

friend: ok but you didn't hear the best part

friend: i'll ONLY post the ones where the hoofs are infected. with puss and everything

me: eww no.. what is wrong with you

a few minutes pass

friend: LAST one i promise

cleaning drainage systems. but i do funny commentary the whole time

me: the f*** dude

who would watch disgusting drainage videos

Most people are waiting for the perfect niche to start a YouTube channel. The real question was always, are you interesting enough to make any idea work?

The niche doesn't make the channel. The person does.
